WELCOME TO SURAT
SCENIC SAFE SERENE
Tucked along the banks of the Balonne River, Surat had its beginnings in 1846 when Sir Thomas Mitchell explored the area.
Steeped in history with links to the Cobb & Co and the wool boom days, Surat is the site of the very last Cobb and Co coach run and is home to the award winning Cobb and Co Changing Station complex, a cultural facility incorporating the Cobb & Co Store Museum, Balonne River Gallery and the Window to the Balonne freshwater aquarium.
With a population of 500 residents, this small town is full of community spirit and takes great pride in being one of the tidiest towns in the South West of Queensland. We are a multiple Tidy Towns Awards winner that boasts historic buildings, tidy facilities and wonderful parks and private gardens.
